Introduction to Urdu



Urdu Alphabet :

ا ب پ ت ٹ ث ج چ ح خ د ڈ ذ ر ڑ ز ژ س ش ص ض ط ظ ع غ ف ق ک گ ل م ن و ه ء ی ے


Alphabets name in Urdu :

Alphabets in urdu known as Abjad ( /ˈɑːbdʒɑːd/)


Urdu Script :

Urdu Language has perso-Arabic script. Urdu is written in Persian style. Persian language is extract of Arabic language.


Numbers of Character in Urdu :


Basic alphabet/Abjad is 37  in urdu language. Other is 15 known as aspirated consonants / compound characters as well. Total alphabet is 52.


vowels :

There are two type of vowels in Urdu. 


  • Long Vowels 
  • Short vowels

Numbers of vowels :

Basic alphabet of Urdu  has 5 vowels.

(ا - و - ء - ی - ے)


Numbers of Consonant :

Basic alphabet of  Urdu  has 32 Consonant.


Reading and writing :

Urdu reading and writing is from right to left, the opposite direction from English.


Urdu writing method :

Every letter in urdu start from the top, e.g. 

Some letters start from the top and go towards right to left, e.g. 

Some letters start from the top and go towards left to right, e.g. 

Types of Letter :


There are three types of letters in Urdu

  1. Connector 
  2. Non Connector
  3. Semi Connector

Capital Letter :

There is no concept of capital letter in Urdu unlike English. But every word in Urdu ends in its independent form whether attached or detached.


Dots role :

Dots are very important in Urdu Abjad (Alphabets) . The number of dots and the position of dots in alphabets (either  above or below) must keep in mind .
